Snakebite First Aid

A suspected snakebite is an emergency. Get professional help right away, keep the person still, and follow instructions from emergency services or a poison center.

  1. Step 1

    Move away and stay calm

Get out of striking distance without approaching the snake. Sit or lie down and move as little as possible.

  2. Step 2

    Call emergency services now

Call your local emergency number or poison center, even if symptoms seem mild. Put the phone on speaker and follow the dispatcher’s instructions.

  3. Step 3

Keep the person and limb still

Help them rest, and gently support the bitten limb so it stays still and below heart level if possible. Avoid walking or unnecessary movement.

  4. Step 4

Remove tight items near the bite

Take off rings, watches, and tight clothing on the affected limb before swelling starts. Do not disturb or put pressure on the bite.

  5. Step 5

    Do not use harmful treatments

Do not cut the wound, suck out venom, apply a tourniquet or ice, or try home remedies. These actions can worsen injury or delay treatment.

  6. Step 6

Notice the snake only if safe

From a safe distance, remember its color, pattern, and size, or take a photo only if this does not bring you closer. Never try to catch or kill it.

  7. Step 7

    Get to a hospital promptly

Go as soon as possible, preferably by ambulance. Clinicians will assess the bite and decide whether antivenom or other treatment is needed.
